How to Teach a Short Story:
A Webinar with Martin Cothran
October 27th, 2015 at 4 P.M. EST
We will be reading and discussing O Henry’s short story “The Whirligig of Life.” O Henry (whose real name was William Sydney Porter) wrote many short stories in his lifetime and is considered by many to have been the master of the genre. “The Whirligig of Life” is not only one of his best short stories, but exemplifies the characteristics that made his stories so appealing. It is about a man and a woman who come into town from their home in the Appalachian mountains seeking a divorce from Justice of the Peace Benaja Widdup. It is funny, poignant, and amazingly short for something that tells us so much about the human condition.
